I was going through my box of stuff from over the years, found a bunch of sweet stuff (including a piece of the guitar Dave smashed at the last show.)
And I found this:

Musicians bowing out of Rustic Overtones

After nine years together and a taste of national success, the Portland rock band Rustic Overtones is breaking up.
Dave Gutter, the lead singer, said Friday that the band will try to do at least one more Portland show with its original line up before calling it quits. The band's end has come gradually over the past few months, as members have begun forming other bands or working on musical projects seperate from Rustic Overtones.
One of the most popular band to come out of Portland, Rustic Overtones seemed poised for national fame when its members signed a deal with a major record label, Arista, in 1998. But the band's rise was stalled because of internal problems at the label. The band finally released an album nationally last year on the smaller Tommy Boy label, selling about 50,000 copies.
But the fame projected for the band never came, and members simply feel it's time to move on.
"We welcome the change, but we know some of our fans will be sad and we're sad, too," said Gutter 27. "We've had some success. We did well with the crazy, unorganized mush that was the Rustic sound. But everything is made to change."
Band members were already going their seperate ways when they found out this week that Tommy Boy had lost its affiliation with the larger Warner Bros. label and is dropping most of its rock acts, including Rustic Overtones. So the band, if it had stayed together, would have been without a contract.
Gutter and other members say the split is extremely amicable. Gutter said he talks regularly with Ryan Zoidi, the saxophone player, who left the band before Christmas. Drummer Tony McNaboe, who left late last year, is also in touch "every day," Gutter said. Zoidis is getting ready to tour with the jazz-funk group Soulive, while McNaboe is working on his own musical project.
Spencer Albee, the keyboardist and backup vocalist, announced his departure from the band just this week. Albee has been recording and performing with his own band, the Popsicko, since the days when Rustic was signed to Arista and waiting for something to happen.
Gutter and bassist Jon Roods, who starts playing rock together when they were 11, have formed a band called the Paranoid Social Club. Gutter said he is already talking to record labels about a possible recording contract. Jason Ward, the band's baritone sax player, is putting together a jazz band, Gutter said.
Gutter said that over the next few weeks the remaining members will still play some shows as Rustic Overtones. He hopes to have one final show soon with the original members, probably at Portland's State Theater "
I remember being crushed. I printed the thing out and brought it to school for days, to spread the sad news.
5 years later and there's a new album coming out! What a dirty joke!
